Vodafone Greece expands Warner Bros. Discovery partnership

Vodafone TV has signed a new multiyear deal with Warner Bros. Discovery.

The agreement includes exclusive first-run Warner Bros. movies and a selection of blockbusters, as well as award-winning series, shows and documentaries from HBO and the HBO Max catalogue.Titles include The Batman, Dune, The Matrix Resurrections, and all new premieres coming out of the Warner Bros studio.

“We are excited to expand our relationship with one of our most important partners, offering the best of all content categories that Warner Bros. has to offer,” said Antonis Prekas, Head of Propositions & Pricing at Vodafone Greece.

“At the same time, we are very pleased that this global media and entertainment company, Warner Bros. Discovery, trusted Vodafone and Vodafone TV to continue offering Greek consumers its rich catalogue.

With this agreement, Vodafone TV continues to be the home of HBO in Greece and with the new additions it emerges as a unique entertainment destination for every family.”A bouquet of channels from the Warner Bros side of the combined company will bring CNN, TCM and Boomerang to the telco’s subscribers.Discovery, TLC, Discovery Science, ID, Animal Planet, Travel Channel, Food Network, as well as Eurosport 1 and Eurosport 2 will continue to be made available.

New perspective in Greece-Turkey relations

The devastating earthquake in southern Turkey has introduced a a new element for Athens in its short-term management of Greek-Turkish relations.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has been forced to focus his attention on the domestic front which has led to a de facto easing of tensions, especially on the rhetorical level, albeit without taking the issues that have been raised by Ankara in recent years off the table.

When news of the quake became known, Athens reacted swiftly, as it did with the war in Ukraine, when Greece was among the first countries to send Kyiv ammunition and RPG launchers.

The government wanted to wanted to show both Ankara and its Western partners that in the face of a humanitarian crisis, differences are put aside.

This was apparent in Brussels when Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis led the the calls on the need to further support Turkey with European aid. Greece’s role was also recognized by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who spoke positively about the communication between Athens and Ankara and the aid sent so far.

After a period in which the primary narrative propagated by the Erdogan government was that Athens was developing anti-Turkish scenarios, the praise regarding the contribution of the Greek EMAK rescue team established favorable associations for Greece in both domestic and international Turkish media.

Yet no one in Athens is under any illusions about long-term Greek-Turkish relations.

Firstly, it is still too early to assess how Erdogan will react in the runup to the May 14 elections. A first question is whether they will actually take place then.

A second consideration is how he will manage this catastrophe of gargantuan proportions at home. In the event that, as competent sources have said, he manages to get the economy up and running quickly, because of the need to build entire cities quickly, this may help to bring about a return to some form of growth as jobs will be created, even in the devastated areas.

If crisis management proves impossible and domestic pressure increases, which is not unlikely for the vast majority of countries in such circumstances, the same sources do not rule out Erdogan’s return to the “external enemy” – i.e Greece – and a return to an atmosphere of electoral polarization.

US welcomes Greek-Turkish dialogue, encourages more talks

The US welcomed on Tuesday recent discussions between Greek and Turkish officials, emphasizing they are a vital step toward achieving greater unity in the transatlantic alliance.

“This is a time when we need unity and cohesion between our allies, certainly between and among our NATO allies. We always regret the escalation of provocative statements,” State Department spokesman Ned Price told reporters.

“The tensions within an alliance between two alliance members certainly does not help anyone. To that end, we welcome the recent meeting in Brussels between Anna-Maria Boura, Prime Minister Mitsotakis’ diplomatic advisor, and Ibrahim Kalin, President Erdogan’s spokesperson and chief advisor, and we continue to encourage these discussions at all levels,” he added.

The comments come after senior officials from Greece, Türkiye and Germany met Monday in Brussels with German government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit saying additional talks are likely.

The meeting brought together Kalin, Boura and German Chancellery Foreign and Security Policy Adviser Jens Ploetner, after weeks-long tensions between Ankara and Athens.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz visited Athens in October and called for closer dialogue between Türkiye and Greece to solve bilateral problems and de-escalate tensions in the Mediterranean.

He said good neighborly relations between Ankara and Athens are vital not only for the two countries but for Europe and NATO.

Türkiye, a NATO member for more than 70 years, has complained of repeated provocative actions and rhetoric by Greece in the region in recent months, including arming islands near Turkish shores that are demilitarized under treaty obligations. Ankara says that such moves frustrate its good-faith efforts for peace.
